Lunchtime Lecture

Rosalina Koons does sculpture and mixed media. Works in a class in the arts center in Glenn Allen. Has an autoimmune disorder. References being in a medical environment with her work. She incorporates biological elements into her work as well. She works with cheap items and art materials.

Process: She uses paper mâché mixed with glue and 'joint compound. She makes a cheap alternative to clay or professional sculpture materials. Then, she uses a thick paper material to make a skeleton. She covers this skeleton with the clay substitute material, letting it harden, and going in with epoxy to add detail. Next, she paints the sculpture with a mix between India ink and a plaster that she made earlier..

Rosaline constantly reworks her art, and I can completely understand it. I am not a huge fan of sculpture, but every time I work on digital art, which is rarely, I always update the artwork when I find little mistakes. This goes the same for my character designs when I finish them and look back at them at another point in time. Reworking previously finished pieces are not a bad thing, but I do think that I would personally want to move on after a while. I will easily get bored of the piece, and I would start a new artwork entirely separate.

I also enjoy the practice of working with cheap art supplies, as it shows that having expensive materials does not always mean that the art is good or that you are skilled. A pencil and printer paper can turn into a beautiful character design piece or abstract art work.
